The hoax is on you.

As if losing his job as starting quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles wasn’t enough, now Twitter is trying to break both of Mike Vick’s legs.

A similar story popped up over the summer, during training camp, that said Vick suffered nonlife-threatening injuries but had two broken legs as the result of a serious multi-vehicle accident. Similar stories have surfaced over the years involving the likes of Jason Terry and Clay Matthews, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Cam Newton, among many others.

They all originate from sites that generate fake celebrity death/serious injury news stories. In the case of ALL of the football players above, the type of injury and the details involved in the “accident” were all EXACTLY THE SAME. The FAKE story goes like so:

“A spokesperson for the [ENTER YOUR CITY] highway safety authority (HSA) has confirmed that [INSERT THE NAME OF THE ATHLETE YOU HATE THE MOST] has broken both of his legs in a traffic altercation. He has been transported via ambulance to a local [CITY] hospital for treatment, and the full extent of his injuries are not known at this time, however, both of his legs were visibly broken and not life threatening according to sources. The accident involved a 2012 BMW driven by [INSERT THE ATHLETE'S NAME UPON WHOM YOU WISH THESE AWFUL INJURIES] and a 76 year old female driver in a 2010 Audi. The driver of the Audi was issued a citation for failing to stop at a red light before striking the vehicle driven by [INSERT THE SAME ATHLETE'S NAME UPON WHOM YOU'D LIKE TO CONDUCT VOODOO-DOLL-LIKE ACTS] at a high rate of speed… The full extent of his injuries are not known at this time, however, both of his legs were visibly broken and not life threatening. Team spokespersons could not be reached for comment at this time.”

As if the horrible storytelling this thing generates and the multiple contradictions (find the original here) weren’t enough the bottom of the webpage actually states that the story is “100% FAKE!” and is for entertainment purposes only. That, however, didn’t stop the masses from making this thing go viral (again).

Such a fickle world we live in. Rapper 2 Chainz even got caught up in the hoax. Vick took the time to ease everyone’s fears today—including Mr. Chainz’s—by tweeting out to the world that he is, in fact, completely healthy.

It’s time to stop believing everything you read on these conflabbed internets, people!
